Flex
With a complete set of responsive flexbox tools, developer can easily control the layout, alignment, and scaling of grid columns, navigation, components, and more. Custom CSS can be required for implementations that are more complicated.
Enable flex behaviors #
Create a flexbox
container using display utilities, then convert direct children elements into flex items. Flex attributes allow for more customization of flex containers and items.
<div class="d-flex p-2">I'm a flexbox container!</div>
RESULT
<div class="d-inline-flex p-2">I'm an inline flexbox container!</div>

Responsive variations also exist for .d-flex

Direction
Using direction utilities, flex items can be directed in a flex container. The horizontal class can typically be omitted here because row is the default setting for the browser. However, there may be circumstances (such as responsive layouts) where developer need to explicitly define this value.
To start the horizontal direction from the opposite side, use .flex-row-reverse
instead of the browser's default .flex-row
.
<div class="d-flex flex-row mb-3">
<div class="p-2">Flex item 1</div>
<div class="p-2">Flex item 2</div>

Use .flex-column
to set a vertical direction, or
.flex-column-reverse
to start the vertical direction from the opposite
side.

Justify content #
To modify the alignment of flex
items on the primary axis (the x-axis to start, the y-axis
if flex-direction: column), use the justify-content
utility on flexbox containers. Pick from start (the default setting for the browser), finish, center, between, around, or evenly.

Align items #
To modify the alignment of flex items on the cross axis (the y-axis to begin with, the x-axis
if flex-direction
: column), use the align-items
utility on flexbox
containers. Choose from stretch (browser default), start, end, center, or baseline.

Align self #
To independently modify an item's alignment on the cross axis (the y-axis
to begin with, the x-axis
if flex-direction: column
), use the align-self utility. The same settings as align-items
are available: stretch (browser default), start, finish, center, baseline.

Fill #
Use the .flex-fill
class on several related components to make them all the available horizontal space while forcing them to widths equal to their content (or equal widths if their content does not exceed their border-boxes).
<div class="d-flex">
<div class="p-2 flex-fill">Flex item with a lot of content</div>

Grow and shrink #
Toggle a flex item's ability to expand to fill available space using the .flex-grow-*
utilities. The .flex-grow-1
element in the example below makes the best use of the area it has while still allowing the other two flex items to have their necessary space.
<div class="d-flex">
<div class="p-2 flex-grow-1">Flex item</div>
<div class="p-2">Flex item</div>
<div class="p-2">Third flex item</div>
</div>
RESULT
Toggle a flex item's ability to shrink if necessary by using the .flex-shrink-*
utilities. The second flex item with .flex-shrink-1
in the example below is compelled to wrap its contents to a new line, or "shrinking," to make room for the first flex item with .w-100
.
<div class="d-flex">
<div class="p-2 w-100">Flex item</div>

Auto margins #
On combining flex alignments with auto margins, Flexbox can accomplish some pretty amazing feats. Default (no auto margin), moving two things to the right (.me-auto)
, and moving two items to the left (.ms-auto)
are three examples of how to control flex items using auto margins.
<div class="d-flex mb-3">
<div class="p-2">Flex item</div>
<div class="p-2">Flex item</div>
<div class="p-2">Flex item</div>

<div class="p-2">Flex item</div>
<div class="p-2">Flex item</div>
<div class="ms-auto p-2">Flex item</div>
</div>
RESULT
With align-items #
By combining the options align-items
, flex-direction
: column, and margin-top
: auto or margin-bottom: auto, developers can vertically move one flex item to the top or bottom of a container.
<div class="d-flex align-items-start flex-column mb-3" style="height: 200px;">
<div class="mb-auto p-2">Flex item</div>
<div class="p-2">Flex item</div>

Wrap #
Modify the way flex containers are wrapped with flex objects. Developers can choose between wrapping (the browser default) and no wrapping at all (.flex-nowrap
), wrapping and reverse wrapping (.flex-wrap-reverse
), and wrapping.

Order #
With the help of a few order tools, developers can alter the visual order of particular flex components. We simply offer the ability to make an item appear first or last and a reset to utilize the DOM order. Add custom CSS for any additional values required since order accepts any integer value between 0 and 5.
<div class="d-flex flex-nowrap">
<div class="order-3 p-2">First flex item</div>

Align content #
Use align-content utilities on flexbox containers to align flex items together on the cross axis. Choose from start (browser default), end, center, between, around, or stretch. To demonstrate these utilities, we’ve enforced flex-wrap: wrap and increased the number of flex items.
Heads up! This property has no effect on single rows of flex items.
